Halloween and fire safety

Halloween is a really fun time of year for people of all ages, but some celebrations present fire risks that could have serious consequences. Follow the tips below to make sure you and your children stay safe.

Costumes

Halloween costumes can be more flammable than normal clothing, and can be risky when there are candles or open fires

  • Buy all costumes from reputable retailers, and check that they carry a CE mark on the label.
  • As with all clothing, Halloween and fancy-dress outfits should always be kept away from fire, lit candles and all other naked flames
  • Children should always be supervised by an adult
  • Homemade fancy dress costumes are not tested to the same flammability standards and may ignite easily and burn more quickly

Candles

If lit candles are part of your celebrations, always follow the safety guidelines, and remember:

  • Always supervise children and pets if using lit candles
  • Don't allow children to carry, play, reach over, light or be near lit candles
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended
  • Remember to always extinguish a candle completely after use
  • Do not carry pumpkins with lit candles inside them
  • Consider using battery-operated candles instead

Firework Code

Only adults should be involved in setting up firework displays, lighting fireworks and the safe disposal of fireworks once they have been used (and remember, alcohol and fireworks don't mix!).

Children and young people should be supervised while they watch fireworks from a safe distance.

Follow these tips for a safer fireworks party:

  • Plan your firework display to make it safe and enjoyable, and ensure it finishes before 11pm
  • Only buy fireworks that carry the CE mark. Keep them in a closed box and use them one at a time
  • Read and follow the instructions on each firework, using a torch to see clearly if necessary
  • Light the firework at arm's length with a taper and stand well back
  • Keep naked flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks
  • Never return to a firework once it has been lit
  • Don't put fireworks in pockets and never throw them
  • Direct any rocket fireworks well away from spectators
