Daniel O’Donnell brings a special surprise to Cook Court Posted on 19 October 2026

People living at Clanmil Housing's Independent Living Scheme at Cook Court in Newtownards enjoyed a very special visit when much-loved Irish singer Daniel O’Donnell called in to thank them personally for their fantastic fundraising efforts.

The residents recently raised an impressive £1,182 for the Irish Cancer Society’s Relay for Life through a coffee morning, bringing people together to support a very worthwhile cause. Daniel’s visit was a lovely surprise and a chance to recognise the generosity and community spirit shown by everyone involved.

Cook Court resident Christine McMenamin, who founded Northern Ireland’s first Daniel O’Donnell fan club, invited the singer to visit the scheme.

Christine said: “It was lovely to invite Daniel along to Cook Court and give him the chance to meet our residents and thank everyone for their fundraising efforts.”

Scheme coordinator Eileen Mitchell said: “We were absolutely delighted to welcome Daniel to Cook Court. Our residents worked hard to make the coffee morning a success, and it is wonderful to see their efforts recognised. Raising £1,182 for the Irish Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is a fantastic achievement, and we are so grateful to everyone who came along, donated and helped make it possible.”

The visit was a memorable occasion for residents, who were delighted to meet Daniel and share in celebrating the success of their fundraising. The scheme extended its thanks to everyone who supported the coffee morning and helped raise money for such an important cause. The coffee morning and Daniel’s visit also provided an opportunity for residents to come together and socialise, reflecting Clanmil’s commitment to creating welcoming communities where people feel connected and supported.
