Daniel joins in celebrations at the new look Cook Court Posted on 24 July 2025

People living at Cook Court, Newtownards had an unexpected surprise recently when singer Daniel O’Donnell called in for a cuppa.
The Clanmil-owned independent scheme was buzzing with excitement as the Donegal star chatted with residents and Clanmil staff who had gathered to mark the completion of a refurbishment. He had been invited by Cook Court resident Christine McMenamin who founded the first Daniel O Donnell fanclub in Northern Ireland.
Guests were entertained by local singer Brook Valentine while they enjoyed afternoon tea, before Daniel took up the mic and sang a few songs to the delighted guests. The party took place in the stunning new surroundings of Cook Court common room, which has been given a revamp as part of a £244,000 investment.
Other work at the scheme included an upgrade of the lighting, fire alarm and warden call systems, as well as a complete redecoration throughout.
New flooring, paint and furniture in the common room, kitchen, quiet area and guest room have transformed the scheme. Residents shared their ideas and feedback on the designs and are delighted with their new look home which is now modern and comfortable.
Isobel Thomas, who has lived at Cook Court for three years, is full of praise for the work. She said:
“It has made such a difference to us all. We all love that it is so bright and cheerful. Everyone that comes through the door compliments how modern the makeover is.”
Clanmil’s Director of Assets and Building Safety, Tony Giffen, commented:
“The work we’ve completed at Cook Court is part of a wider investment of £5.4m in planned upgrades we’re delivering during 2024/25 to maintain and improve properties. We’re grateful to the people living here for sharing their ideas with us, and we always aim to focus on customers’ needs. We hope they can continue to enjoy living in a place that’s modern, safe and comfortable and that provides a welcoming social space.”
